Esther and the Bee. [and the leaf]
It was the kind of Sunday where you just have to roll the car windows down, wish for the first time that you didn't have short hair so the wind could whip it all around, feel the sun beating down on you through the clouds and just give a great big sigh. The kind that Liszt dedicated 'Un Sospiro' to.
With Vanessa beside me and Micah behind, I drove down the road. Freddy and I were one and I hadn't a care in the road. I mean world.
I believe I was telling a story. Typical. Micah and Vanessa were listening intently. We were following Dad and Co. to the airfield so we could watch the model plane airshow. Dad did a good job by the way. I was chatting away when I felt something hard bang against my arm and land on my lap. The talking stopped. I glanced down. I glanced up. I glanced down. 'AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!' Said I. 'AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH' Said Vanessa. *SCREEEEEECCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHH* Said Freddy as we careened around a tight corner, inches from the ditch. I slammed on the brakes and flew out of the car, [we were in the middle of the road, but it didn't really matter because its upstate NY and it was a back road] Vanessa not far behind. 'What can I kill it with?' Says Micah, heart beating fast-only because he knew he almost died back in that ditch there-
Within seconds the yellow jacket was dead officially, a lady with millions of bugs plastered all over her white car had stopped to ask if we needed help. We replied that everything was under control. Soon I was back in the car driving along and thinking about how I could get some screens maybe installed in the windows.
Today I was driving along downtown Oneonta. It had been a long day and I was on my way home. I glanced at the lake on my left. How beautiful. The sparkling blue waters made me think of Anne of Green Gables. It was then in that tragic moment something flew in my car window. Why oh WHY hadn't I learned my lesson and left it up this time? But it was too late. I had already started swerving all over the road, and a large tractor trailer swerved to miss me and smashed into the lake, unfortunately carrying a massive amount of oil! Before I knew it Wildlife rescue teams were on scene to rescue the dying ducks, frogs, lily pads....? and more!! The road was closed and this was soon to become the greatest incident since...was it Exxon? And all because of me. Me being scared because of a LEAF.
Ok so maybe all that didn't happen quite like that. But a leaf did flutter in and scare me half to death. And I did swerve. Oh and the first two paragraphs are completely true. No exaggerations.
